I have a friend in the Oratory who has an impressive collection of ecclesiastical headgear. However, even he would be pushed to match this cornucopia of religious hats. That's Cardinal Slipyj, by the way, in his galero.
Thanks to Eoghain for sending me the link.

Very fetching!
To paraphrase McNair in 1776:
"Sweet Jesus, could you imagine trying to borrow a dollar from him!"

I've seen the one hanging over Cardinal Heenan's tomb in Westminster Cathedral.
So that's what the look like on ...
On what occasion do Cardinals wear them?
Karen LOL my thoughts exactly (well almost). It could make a very useful weapon in the fight against heresy though. When faced with the reprobates he could, by a fluid deft action of the wrist, launch the lethal weapon frisbie-like in the direction of the neck thus removing the head in one clean single strike. :-)
Amen, Ben. If he was a nun he could freeze an entire herd of run amok school children with one frosty look. He wouldn't even have to say "you're all on detention." You'd just show up every day for the next month.

Remind me of Felice's Catholic fashion show. I can't remember the name of the film from which it came though - I know Gore Vidal was in it. (Sorry, it's old age creeping on - I was 38 yesterday!!) :-(
Judging by a seminarian brother of said Oratory's smart appearance (spotted on Friday wandering through the streets of Rome) It seems this impeccable taste is rubbing off on the next generation... I'm not sure the same can be said of the Brummie lot!
The saintly Cardinal Slipyj - so badly mistreated by Paul VI for his opposition to Osteopolitik.
